The Alpharetta chapter of PATH (People Against Trafficking of Humans) club recently hosted a presentation by Amber McKeen, an expert educator and child safety advocate from Children's Healthcare Of Atlanta. In the presentation, she explained the characteristics that potential victims tend to have, why they don't just run away, how pimps mentally manipulate them, and what the State of Georgia is doing now to stop sec trafficking. Just under 50 students attended the event (even though a Falcons football player was speaking in the auditorium at that same time), and the size of the audience allowed for an open discussion forum with lots of student participation.

On Thursday, October 23rd, Lori Hetherington’s second period AP Statistics participated in a test kitchen survey, testing a new recipe for applesauce. How’s that for real-world application?

 

Alpharetta High School was selected as 1 of 10 schools, and the only high school, in the state of Georgia to be a “Georgia Grown Test Kitchen”.  The Georgia Grown Test Kitchen is a program in which the School Nutrition Program and the Department of Agriculture work together to create healthy recipes using “Georgia Grown” ingredients and then taste test these recipes with students throughout the 2014-2015 School Year.

On Thursday, October 23rd, Lori Hetherington’s second period AP Statistics participated in a test kitchen survey, testing a new recipe for applesauce. How’s that for real-world application? 

“Our current unit is Sampling and Experimentation”, explains Ms. Hetherington.  “The students have learned about different types of sampling procedures as well as the right and wrong ways to sample from a population.”  Ms. Hetherington’s students are currently working in groups to develop a survey on a topic of their choice.  They must write the survey, choose their sample, give the survey and analyze the results.  Through their participation in this real life survey, the students can see the importance of proper data collection and analysis and how this information impacts everyday life.  In this case, what they may be seeing in the school cafeteria in the near future.

Students Participate in QR Scavenger Hunt

Students were given an iPad per group to scan QR codes as they progressed through a scavenger hunt of math problems.  Students were given the problem on a worksheet and needed to show their work.  They had the option to check their solution only using a QR code located on the wall.  If they got it correct, they were able to use the next problem listed that pertained to that scavenger hunt card.  If they wanted to check their work, they were able to use the app on the iPad that breaks down their own typed in problem step by step.  The solution from the app was written in a different format.  This means the student had to connect how we write the solution two different ways.  The iPad app was chosen because two days later, we had to solve the polynomial using factoring properties.  Therefore, students were in control of their learning through the entire process...that spanned over a four-day period.

It was a group effort from the Raiders in creating their submission for the 2014 Macy's Lip Dub Challenge. Macy's is awarding $25,000 to the school who can submitt the best single take video to the Beach Boy's "Be True to Your School." The entire school came out in their spirit wear, representing both AHS and their respective clubs and sports; including  Principle Kersey who kickstarted the video.

Seniors Devon Merlette and Elyse Martin qualify as semifinalists for the National Achievement Scholarship

More than 1,600 Black American high school seniors who have been designated Semifinalists in the 51^st annual national Achievement Scholarship program were announced today by National Merit Scholarship Corporation (NMSC) officials. The Semifinalists from Alpharetta High School are Devon Merlette and Elyse Martin (pictured above). These scholastically talented young men and women now have an opportunity to continue in the competition for the approximately 800 Achievement Scholarship awards worth about $2.5 million that will be awarded next spring.

The National Achievement Scholarship Program, conducted by the NMSC, is a privately funded academic competition that operates without government assistance. It was initiated in 1964 to recognize academically promising black students throughout the nation and to provide scholarships to a substantial number of the most outstanding program participants. These students have been identified based on their scores from the 2013 Preliminary SAT/National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test. To date, approximately 33,500 young men and women have received Achievement Scholarship awards worth about $105 million.
