Biology Classes Having Some Eco-Fun!
On Friday, all of the on level Biology classes held class out on the practice field. The students simulated an ecosystem by assuming roles as food, water or shelter (the environment) and the deer that depended on those factors for survival. The student were able to see how, when resources were high, it allowed for the deer population to grow and when the deer population got too large they depleted the resources. After a few rounds of “play”, wolves were added to the ecosystem and the fun really began!
The students were able to see how predators, along with the environmental resources, impacted the deer population and how the availability of prey caused the wolf population to change. Ms. Smither did a great job running the game and making sure all the deer, wolves and the environmental factors were true to the roles they had in the ecosystem. Students used the data collected during the game to make graphs showing population changes and to analyze different causes and effects that occur in an ecosystem.

Georgia Association of Student Council Advisor of the Month Whitney Decaminada
This month's GASC Advisor of the month is Ms. Whitney Decaminada from Alpharetta High School. Ms. Decaminada is the head advisor of the Alpharetta High School Student Council Chapter. For more than 10 years, her students believe that she has been a great motivator, advisor, and mentor. Along with leading student council, Ms. Decaminada is the Testing Coordinator as well as teaches a leadership class at Alpharetta. Students at Alpharetta say that Ms. Decaminada is a role model to students and also adults because of her passion to help their school and their students to be the best they can be. "She is a very motivated teacher and has taught our Student Council so many valuable lessons. Ms. Decaminada has motivated us to always perform our best and to serve our school as well as other students with kindness and positivity," Sophia Abedi, a student of Ms Decaminada says. She has taught the students that the most important reward to volunteering is helping others. And with that platform of encouraging voluntarism throughout Alpharetta, her students regularly help with the Iron Kids Triathlon, Mr. AHS, Homecoming, Prom, and with her leadership, they raised $10,000 for Bert's Big Adventure!
AHS Student Raises Over 50,000 Dollars for Leukemia & Lymphoma Society!
For the third year in a row, high school students across the country are redefining what it means to be philanthropic in today's youth culture. Through the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society's (LLS) newest innovation in fundraising, the Students of the Year program, more than 600 motivated high school students raised significant funds for LLS's cutting-edge cancer research and patient services. The Atlanta candidates raised over $1,340,000 for the mission of LLS to find a cure and improve the lives of patients and their families. Atlanta is the first Students of the Year campaign to ever reach $1 million – this is a huge accomplishment and the students were instrumental in this success.
Alpharetta High School’s Sophia Abedi received the 2018 Top Campaign fundraiser award, raising over $50,000. She was one of the first Student of the Year candidates from Alpharetta High School, and because of her accomplishments went on to represent the Georgia Chapter for the National recognition. Because of her accomplishment, LLS granted her donation to be linked to a specific research portfolio.
The Leukemia and Lymphoma society is the world’s largest voluntary health agency dedicated to cure blood cancer. The money raised by the students will benefit the critical research and patient programs supported by the society.
