Alpharetta Going Greener

Alpharetta High School is excited that our Loraxs planted 5 dogwoods today. We have 3 more…next year they will bloom and beautify the courtyard between the 2000 & 3000 halls.

We are working on an Evergreen Schools Certification for Alpharetta HighJ

We have 3 more to plant---probably Friday.

Thanks to Terry Porter. She is a great resource for us. She helped the kids with their Adopt-a-stream certification which involved learning about the biology of streams and value and indications of macro-invertebrates in the stream, and also chemical testing of the water and how to gather samples. AHS has nearly 90 students who will be adopt-a-stream certified in the biological portion and about 55 who were able to also complete the chemistry study and testing.

Next year we plan to have an Adopt-a-stream club and this will be for North Fulton High Schools

Alpharetta High School Goes to School in France

Twenty French students at Alpharetta High School went to school in France over spring break as part of an on-going exchange program.  In October, 21 exchange students from the Lycée Saint Jean Hulst in Versailles visited Alpharetta and in April, the AHS students had an opportunity to return the visit.  Staying with their French host families in Versailles offered AHS students an amazing opportunity to  experience the art, culture, daily life, education, food, and history of France.  AHS students attended classes at the lycée, visited the famous château of Versailles, explored the monuments and museums of Paris, while also learning how to make baguettes at a bakery, navigate Paris on foot and by métro, attend an opera, and shop at the weekly market.

The exchange program was organized by AHS teachers Katherine Rozei and Denni Proctor and SJH teachers Bénédicte Applegate and Guillemette Toutlemonde.

Alpharetta High Musicians Perform at Carnegie Hall

Alpharetta, Ga. – On March 23rd the Alpharetta High School Orchestras and Band traveled to New York City to perform in world famous Carnegie Hall on March 25th at the National Band and Orchestra Festival in the Stern Auditorium on the Perelman Stage.  The invitation-only performance selections included compositions of Johannes Brahms, Claude T. Smith, Gustav Mahler and Gustav Holst.

Judges of the competition provided the Orchestras and Band superlative ratings of their performance, and audience reaction was overwhelmingly positive and congratulatory, employing descriptions such as “exquisite, magnificent sound” and a “professional performance”.  The musicians themselves were thrilled with this perhaps “once in a lifetime” event, commenting that the opportunity to perform at Carnegie Hall was “surreal”, “incredible”, “awe-inspiring”, “magical and unforgettable” and “breathtaking”.

One musician perhaps summed it up for the entire group by stating “the first note we played seemed as if it floated right in front of us – as if we could touch it and literally mix it with our next note”.  Another said “the feeling of confidence after performing well onstage really brought our orchestra together as a community”.

While in New York the students took advantage of the world’s greatest city by visiting the 9/11 Memorial, attending performances of Les Misérables on Broadway and the Blue Man Group a bit further downtown.  Also included were walking tours of the Big Apple along with shopping and feasting on local New York cuisine, and enjoying a trip on the NYC Subway System.

The Alpharetta High School Orchestras are led by Conductor Sheldon Fisher and Guest Conductor Sharon Anderson.  The Alpharetta High School Band is led by Band Director Michael J. Walsh and Assistant Band Director Ira Jenkins.

Speaker at AHS
On Thursday March 24th, Mary Beth Tinker from the famous 1st Amendment case Tinker v. Des Moines visited Alpharetta High School. Tinker v. Des Moines was a case about students being able to protest the Vietnam War by wearing black armbands. She spoke to students in Government, AP Government, and AP US History students, as well as some other students and teachers, about the importance and significance of the case. She also talked about student rights and responsibilities in schools, and about issues concerning students in schools today. Students were also given the opportunity to ask questions about the case and about how it impacted her life.

Students learn about Waste Water Treatment
AHS students went to learn about waste water treatment at the John's Creek Environmental Campus;http://www.fultoncountyga.gov/home-jcec

It is a very environmentally conscious state of the art, water treatment center. All of the treatment is done underground so no bad smells or noise. It also has very beautiful grounds--some HS kids get their prom pics taken there and they have had wedding groups there as well.
Anyway they were the first large water processing plant to use membrane tubes (look like spaghetti) to filter water and these membranes do an amazing job of cleaning.
Students also were told about the waste of using bottled water--that bottled water mostly comes from the tap  and that most water bottles are never recycled, and that our tap water is great! The students received reusable water bottles as they left the tour.

Alpharetta High Orchestra Achieves High Marks

AHS Orchestras sets the standard for FCS Schools musical accomplishment by their performances at the GMEA, LGPE and Carnegie Hall.
Alpharetta, Ga. The results of the Georgia Music Educators Association District V Large Group Performance Evaluation were recently released. The Alpharetta High School Sinfonia and Symphony Strings all received the highest rating of Superior with Chamber and Philharmonia closely following, both with an Excellent rating. Immediately following the LGPE performance all AHS musicians participated in a music sight-reading evaluation, receiving the highest rating of Superior.
The LGPE program is an evaluation process for musical performance and sight-reading abilities for orchestras and their teachers. The LGPE affords valuable opportunity and motivation for student learning during an extended period of time prior to the event as part of regularly scheduled school work. The judges are recognized authorities in the field of music education and provide a written and/or oral critique.
The success of the LGPE performance was preceded in January by the AHS Symphony Orchestra invitation-only performance at the GMEA In-Service Conference in Athens, where selected orchestras and bands from the entire state performed for the leading music educators in Georgia. The AHS Orchestra will also be performing at Carnegie Hall in New York City on March 25th, 2016.
The Alpharetta High School Orchestras are directed by Mr. Sheldon Fisher.
