PlantingScience is a learning community where scientists provide online mentorship to student teams as they design and think through their own inquiry projects. Engaging in the science process and becoming familiar with science practices enhances science learning. The ability to collaborate, discuss, and reflect with scientists and peers opens new doors to motivate students, and builds necessary pathways for 21st century skills.
Family Science Night
On April 15, the Science National Honor Society presented Family Science Night for Creek View and Manning Oaks Elementary. The SNHS students organized the activity, coming up with labs to represent the various areas of Science; Physics, Chemistry, Earth & Environmental, Biology and Anatomy. The SNHS students presented interactive labs for the elementary students and parents.

Small group of attendees this year but the SNHS students have already begun planning for next year for a much bigger Family Science Night. The FSN was held on April 15 as a way of getting elementary students excited about science. The elementary students were to take their milestone test during the following week.

Some exciting labs that the students experienced were:
Methane Fire Bubbles, Lava Lamps, Edible layers of soil, Making Silly Putty, motors and electricity, Van Der Graf generator, pH rainbow, how lungs work, invisible ink messages, and several more.

AND...a good time was had by all.

Science Night

Science National Honor Society held their first annual Science Night at Alpharetta High School Friday March 15th.  Students from local elementary schools were invited to come to AHS to see and learn Science!  SNHS students set up several stations in one of our science labs offering a variety of scientific experiences for their young guests.  Stations included learning about the density of liquids by building a Lava Lamp, Learning about pH with The Chemistry of Milk of Magnesia, a station dealing with electrostatic, one making invisible ink, learning about how the lungs work by building a model lung, and even a Flame testing demonstration.  Each elementary student who attended was given a Science Passport that he or she could take around to the various stations and get a stamp for having participated in the “experiment”.

The goal of this event was to bring the community into the school and get youngsters excited about science.  SNHS hope to have this event each year.

Science National Honor Society is sponsored by: Anthony Murdock and Christine Lauer.

Alpharetta Going Greener

Alpharetta High School is excited that our Loraxs planted 5 dogwoods today. We have 3 more…next year they will bloom and beautify the courtyard between the 2000 & 3000 halls.

We are working on an Evergreen Schools Certification for Alpharetta HighJ

We have 3 more to plant---probably Friday.

Thanks to Terry Porter. She is a great resource for us. She helped the kids with their Adopt-a-stream certification which involved learning about the biology of streams and value and indications of macro-invertebrates in the stream, and also chemical testing of the water and how to gather samples. AHS has nearly 90 students who will be adopt-a-stream certified in the biological portion and about 55 who were able to also complete the chemistry study and testing.

Next year we plan to have an Adopt-a-stream club and this will be for North Fulton High Schools

Alpharetta High School Goes to School in France

Twenty French students at Alpharetta High School went to school in France over spring break as part of an on-going exchange program.  In October, 21 exchange students from the Lycée Saint Jean Hulst in Versailles visited Alpharetta and in April, the AHS students had an opportunity to return the visit.  Staying with their French host families in Versailles offered AHS students an amazing opportunity to  experience the art, culture, daily life, education, food, and history of France.  AHS students attended classes at the lycée, visited the famous château of Versailles, explored the monuments and museums of Paris, while also learning how to make baguettes at a bakery, navigate Paris on foot and by métro, attend an opera, and shop at the weekly market.

The exchange program was organized by AHS teachers Katherine Rozei and Denni Proctor and SJH teachers Bénédicte Applegate and Guillemette Toutlemonde.

Alpharetta High Musicians Perform at Carnegie Hall

Alpharetta, Ga. – On March 23rd the Alpharetta High School Orchestras and Band traveled to New York City to perform in world famous Carnegie Hall on March 25th at the National Band and Orchestra Festival in the Stern Auditorium on the Perelman Stage.  The invitation-only performance selections included compositions of Johannes Brahms, Claude T. Smith, Gustav Mahler and Gustav Holst.

Judges of the competition provided the Orchestras and Band superlative ratings of their performance, and audience reaction was overwhelmingly positive and congratulatory, employing descriptions such as “exquisite, magnificent sound” and a “professional performance”.  The musicians themselves were thrilled with this perhaps “once in a lifetime” event, commenting that the opportunity to perform at Carnegie Hall was “surreal”, “incredible”, “awe-inspiring”, “magical and unforgettable” and “breathtaking”.

One musician perhaps summed it up for the entire group by stating “the first note we played seemed as if it floated right in front of us – as if we could touch it and literally mix it with our next note”.  Another said “the feeling of confidence after performing well onstage really brought our orchestra together as a community”.

While in New York the students took advantage of the world’s greatest city by visiting the 9/11 Memorial, attending performances of Les Misérables on Broadway and the Blue Man Group a bit further downtown.  Also included were walking tours of the Big Apple along with shopping and feasting on local New York cuisine, and enjoying a trip on the NYC Subway System.

The Alpharetta High School Orchestras are led by Conductor Sheldon Fisher and Guest Conductor Sharon Anderson.  The Alpharetta High School Band is led by Band Director Michael J. Walsh and Assistant Band Director Ira Jenkins.
